MOTORISTS FACE ROAD WORKS NIGHTMARE

Long Eaton and Sandiacre motorist are about to face a seven month road works nightmare as a water pipe replacement scheme is set to begin. Severn Trent are investing more than a quarter of a million pounds to replace water pipes in Long Eaton and Sandiacre to provide a reliable water supply for the future.

Work is scheduled to start on Monday 16th January and is expected to take around seven months. Roads that will be affected in the first phase are Sandiacre: Derby Road, Longmoor Lane, Victor Crescent, Lock Lane, Margaret Avenue, Hayworth Road and Dorothy Avenue. Long Eaton: Dovedale Avenue, Rosedale Close, Sterndale Road and Monsaldale Close.

In recent years a number of pipes have burst in the area and the water company has now taken the decision to make a significant investment to improve supplies. Mike Holder, from Severn Trent, explains: “This is a big investment for Long Eaton and Sandiacre as we’re very aware that, recently, the pipes there haven’t been as reliable as we’d like and, after several bursts, we realised we needed to take action to stop it happening so often in the future. In total we’ll be replacing around 5km of pipes to help reduce interruptions in supply to both residents and businesses and spending around £260,000."

Mike added: “This is a big project and we expect it will take around seven months to complete so we want to work with people in the area to minimise disruption to their daily life as much as possible. We’ll be working as quickly as possible to get the new pipes in place but there will be some traffic restrictions while the work is completed. We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience this causes but the new pipes will make a huge difference to water supplies in both towns.”

THREE CARS STOLEN

Three cars have been taken from the forecourt of a used vehicle firm in Long Eaton. The theft took place sometime between noon on Christmas Eve and 4.40pm on Wednesday, December 28th, thieves broke into Top Gear, in Tamworth Road, and stole several sets of keys. They then took a grey Peugeot 207, registration starting LN07, a silver Mercedes SLK 200, registration starting MK58 and a silver Peugeot 207, registration starting ML10.

STUFF ON THE ROAD TO DONNO

Cyclists using the roadside path from the Harrington Bridge to Donnington may have noticed some new tarmac at a gateway opposite the new Aldi site. An improvement. But it wasn’t done for cyclists. Beyond the gates will be a large construction compound in use 24 hours a day. Costain Galliford will use it whilst extending the Smart Motorway scheme from Jctn 25 to 23A. This will take two years, cost £120 million and resemble the M1 we now see north of Jctn 25. Four lanes, no hard shoulder, more signs to read and many cameras. There will be a lot of activity close to the houses near the M1, plenty of lane closures and lowered speed limits during the project. The plans do include improved and replacement sound barriers. A Google search for M1 junctions 23A 25 smart motorway should lead to RoadsHighways.Gov. with more details. If you need a job and you are good with tarmac you may get lucky.

NEED A GRANT

Community and voluntary groups in Erewash have another chance to apply for grants of up to £2,000 to help them with their work in the borough. Erewash Borough Council has opened a final funding round of its Small Grants Scheme for 2016/17 and is urging local groups to get in touch and apply for financial support ahead of the closing deadline on Friday 17th February. The council has helped many groups over the last few years through the grants scheme and is still keen to hear from more groups – however large or small - that could use a grant for specific projects that help people living in Erewash.
Funding rounds earlier in the 2016/17 financial year have already helped 30 community and voluntary groups who won a share of just over £36,700 in total. Councillor Carol Hart, Erewash Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Community Engagement, says:
“We want to get the message out to groups in all corners of our borough that these grants are on offer to help them. It doesn’t matter how small the group is, we want to hear from you if you are working to help others in our borough. We know there is so much good work of all kinds happening every day. Will a grant of up to £2,000 help you? Then get in touch now!”
The deadline for community grant applications is close of play on Friday 17th February 2017.

POLICE LAUNCH MURDER INQUIRY

Police launched a murder investigation after a 38-year-old woman was found injured at a house in Borrowash. She was later pronounced dead at hospital. Police were called at 10.55am on Friday 16th December after a 22-year-old man, who lives on Station Road, sought help. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where he was treated for head injuries. Officers then went to a house on Charnwood Avenue where they found 38-year-old Claire Nagle (nee Paton) with serious injuries. She was taken to hospital but could not be saved. Thirty minutes later Vincent Nagle, (44) of Station Road in Borrowash, died after a collision with a lorry on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 26 and 25.
Chief Superintendent Jim Allen, area commander for the south of the county said: “I’m very grateful for the patience and understanding of the many thousands of people affected by this incident. Closing a motorway is not a decision taken lightly at any time. In a fast-moving situation, with several scenes of crime, the death of two people and another seriously injured, it was vitally important that officers established whether any other people were involved. We can now confirm that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, which involved people who were related to each other.”
Inquests into the deaths were opened on Tuesday 20th December by HM Coroner Dr Robert Hunter.

RECYCLING OVER BUSY XMAS PERIOD

Bins at busy recycling sites in Erewash were emptied daily until the new year, but boxes were left on the floor at the two sites on Boxing Day despite some of the bins being empty and able to take waste.
Several tonnes of waste that had been left on the floor alongside bins at two recycling areas in Long Eaton - at West Park and Asda - was cleared by the council on Bank Holiday Tuesday.
The council had appealed to residents to break down boxes and other large recyclable items which would then fit into the blue recycling containers. Boxes were left on the floor at the two sites on Boxing Day despite some of the bins being empty and able to take waste. The council appreciates that residents have more recyclable waste after Christmas Day and is delighted that they are keen to recycle. However, although it was busy, there were empty bins at the sites and much of the waste left on the ground could have been broken down and paper made smaller to fit into the containers.
