MAN ARRESTED AFTER CINEMA ARSON

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a suspected arson at a derelict building in Long Eaton. Officers were called to the old Galaxy cinema, formerly the Scala, on Derby Road at about 10.30 onTuesday night January 24th to a report of a fire. The suspect, who lives in Long Eaton, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning and was questioned later that day. AFFRAY AND ASSAULT IN LONG EATON

 Police are investigating an allegation that a group of men verbally and physically attacked people in a fast food restaurant. Several witnesses to the alleged incident have made contact with us and we have arrested five people but we now believe there could be other witnesses who have yet to come forward and we’re trying to trace them. Shortly after 8pm on Thursday, December 22nd, police received several calls to KFC in Cross Street, Long Eaton. Witnesses told them that a group of young men had been in the restaurant and had been verbally abusive, caused criminal damage and had thrown a golf club at a 22-year-old customer, which broke his jaw. The group had left when officers arrived, as had several potential witnesses who helped staff eject the group from the restaurant.

The people we arrested – two boys aged 14 and 16 and three men aged 18, 19 and 19, have all been released on bail while we continue our inquiries. COOP ROBBER APPEARS IN COURT

Police have charged a man in connection with an armed robbery which took place in Sawley last summer.Luke Monk (28) was arrested at a house in Spondon, on Wednesday 18th January and was later charged with robbery and assault by beating. A 26-year-old woman at the house was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and released on bail. Mr Monk who appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 19th, spoke only to confirm his name and address which he gave as no fixed abode. The case was referred to Derby Crown Court where he is due to appear on Monday February 6th. He was remanded in custody.

At around 10pm on Tuesday, August 23rd, two men entered the Co-op, in Draycott Road, Sawley, holding knives. They threatened staff and took cigarettes and money from the till before leaving on a motorised scooter or motorbike. Another man arrested in connection with the robbery has been released without charge.

MP BACKS COMMUNITY RADIO

In a debate in Parliament, local MP Maggie Throup has backed the move for community radio stations to be part of the DAB network. Currently inhibited by astronomical costs, community radio stations such as Erewash Sound are too often restricted in their coverage. With a new Bill going through Parliament, this is about to change and will be of great benefit to Erewash residents and their local radio station. Speaking after the debate, Maggie said:

 

“At the moment, residents in Long Eaton often struggle to get good reception for Erewash Sound due to limited band width and transmission power. I have been looking into this issue for some time now and believe that one solution is for DAB radio to be more affordable for local community radio stations such as Erewash Sound. The Government has been carrying out trials to check the feasibility of rolling out DAB at a local level, and the results look very promising. As more and more people use DAB, and as technology changes, it is important to make sure community radio stations don’t get left behind or priced out of the market. The Bill got through its Second Reading and now will be considered at Committee Stage when amendments may be made. However I am optimistic that it will pass through the various legislative stages relatively easily and speedily, opening up the opportunity for Erewash Sound to go digital and broadcast to the whole of Erewash.”

RIVERSIDE FOOTBALL CLUB

If you ever played football and thought that your playing days were over, think again. Riverside FC runs a team for the over 50s in the Derbyshire Evening league. Walking Football is taking off in Derbyshire as we, the silver generation, enjoy playing and mixing with people we played against in our youth.

 

Riverside Walking Football Club meets every Tuesday at Wilsthorpe School Gym at 18:00. We play league matches at Springwood leisure centre about once a month and intend to enter the Derbyshire FA Walking Festivals throughout the coming months. The Festivals are very friendly occasions where competition isn’t the main consideration. Teams can be mixed, so ladies don’t think that this is a male only preserve. We are an inclusive club and welcome everyone to our Tuesday turn up and play sessions. Age isn’t an issue for these as we have some younger players who enjoy playing this version of the game. The rules are simple, no running and enjoy yourself! All you need is a pair of trainers and the love of the game to improve fitness and meet like minded people.

CASH BIKE AND JEWELLERY STOLEN

Police are appealing for information after a high value mountain bike, bespoke jewellery, and a large amount of cash were stolen from a home in Long Eaton. The theft occured between 6.15am and 11.45am on Friday, January 6th. Thieves entered the house on Sycamore Road, Long Eaton through an insecure window and carried out a search. A large amount of cash, personal documents, and a quantity of bespoke jewellery were stolen. Police have also issued a photograph of a black Whyte mountain bike with orange writing and handle grips, which was also taken during the burglary. DOG ATTACK

Did you video a dog attack in Long Eaton

Police investigating a dog attack in Long Eaton are appealing for a witness to come forward who may have videoed the incident. PC Jennifer Casey said: “We have been investigating the attack since it took place, on September 26th 2015. A man we wanted to speak to was traced in May 2016 and interviewed about the incident while a second man was identified and spoken to in September 2016. Two dogs have been traced and seized as part of the investigation. Several people stopped to help the victim and her dog and they have provided witness statements.”

New information has now come to light that a girl or young woman was seen filming the incident and police would like to speak to her to see if she can offer any information to help the inquiry.

Police were called to a park in Russell Street at around 11.30am on Saturday, September 26th 2015 following reports that a woman had been walking her dog when two other dogs started attacking her pet. The woman intervened and was also bitten.

LONG EATON CAMERA CLUB

On Monday night at the Club House the evening was spent reviewing the Postal Photographic Competition. A postal circle of between and ten members is formed and prints are circulated between members. Members then comment and score the prints out of 20 points. At the end of the season points are tallied up and the winners notified. Members do not have to be in the same club, and is the only event that members from different clubs participate at a local level. There were some very interesting and intriguing images on display. It is still not to late to join, first three nights are free. We meet at the Womens Institute Sawley, Monday nights 7:30.

After the holiday break the Camera Club resumed on Monday the 9th of January. The evening was devoted to reviewing the PDI (Projected Digital Images of the NEMPH (North & East Midlands Photographic Federation)Competition. The competition is an annual even and 40 camera clubs from all over the region took part, the judges had to review over 1600images, reducing these to around 300 which were selected for further reviewing. Sadly Long Eaton Camera Club members did not manage to make it into the second round.
Winners of the PDI competition were Rolls Royce,of the three hundred or so images for further review more sixty belonged to the Rolls Royce Club.

GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS

Residents living in the Long Eaton and south area of Erewash are reminded that this week (23-26 January) is the last refuse collection when recyclable waste can be put out in brown bins. After this week, brown bins must only be used for garden waste ahead of the restart of brown bin collections week commencing Monday 6th February.

For residents in Ilkeston and the north of the borough, week commencing 30th January is the last time brown bins can be used for recyclable waste ahead of the restart of garden waste collections on Monday 13th February.

Householders who have been using their brown bins over the winter must revert to putting out kerbside recycling in green bags or they can purchase a blue bin. For more details call 0115 907 2244.

THUMBS UP FOR ART GALLERY

The 6th January was an important day for Mr Larry Wren and Mr Michael Dack, both owners of two totally different retail environments that have now joined forces and become a unique selling environment.

Wren’s Home Furnishing and Culture ART Café and Art Gallery was opened by His Worship the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Abey Stevenson who was accompanied by his Mayoress. Both were met by Larry Wren and Michael Dack at the shop which is situated at 73 Market Place ( on the corner of Oxford Street) Long Eaton who gave them a guided tour of Contemporary Furniture and Art Gallery. Whilst walking round they were introduced to several artists and photographers that had their work on display. The Mayor and his wife were impressed by the interior design work that had been carried out by the use of wood that had once been pallets and now had become a magnificent backdrop to the walls of the shop and art gallery. In conversation with Mr Mayor it had come to light that he had once had an art gallery and coffee shop in Nottingham.

This link impressed him and he then asked the two owners how they had come up with this unique collaboration of Retail Contemporary Furniture and Art. Mr Dack explained that both he and Mr Wren had known each other for almost thirty years and it was by way of a chance meeting that the project was born. Mr Wren explained that the Art Gallery that held the three arches in the back of the shop were actually covered by a stud wall and that Mr Dack was insistent to remove and so bring that part of the gallery to life.

Mr Dack went on: “The feeling that this whole gallery experience has soul and warmth that all visitors have resonated this feeling, which is so refreshing and helps customers to relax and feel almost wrapped in a cosy blanket with a coffee. I feel blessed to have been given this opportunity to show the buying public that art does not have to be for the few it is to be enjoyed by all.”

The Mayor and Mayoress enjoyed the whole experience over a period of 2 hours with photographs being taken of the cutting of the ribbon signifying the Grande Opening of Wrens Home Furnishings and Culture ART Café.

A professional Coffee making machine has been installed so that all customers can enjoy a delicious coffee along with a selection of cakes, from £4 then enjoy a truly great experience. A very unique concept that is a breath of fresh air for the High Street of Long Eaton and surrounding areas.
