VIOLENT SHOPLIFTER JAILED

A woman who threatened a supermarket employee with a knife after being caught shoplifting has been jailed. Danielle Summers, 27, entered the store in Derby Road, Stapleford, on the afternoon of Sunday 25th October. After filling a basket with goods she attempted to walk out of the store without paying. When challenged by a member of shop staff she pulled out kitchen knife and left the building. She returned around an hour-and-a-half later, filled a basket with alcohol and food and shoved another member of staff before leaving.

The offences came just three months after a similar episode on 25th July, when Summers stole items from a shop in Ulldale Court, Chilwell, before returning later and slapping an employee who tried to intervene. Summers, of no fixed abode, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court today (Wednesday) and was sentenced to a total of 36 months in prison for offences including robbery and possession of a knife, theft and assault.

PC Luke Barrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Summers is a violent shoplifter who seemed to believe she had the right to take whatever she wanted from local businesses. To make matters worse she became violent and confrontational when challenged about her behaviour. This sentence the reflects the seriousness of her offending and I hope provides some comfort to her victims.”

POLICE WANT TO SPEAK TO THIS MAN

Officers investigating a distraction burglary of an elderly couple in Long Eaton want to speak to the man pictured in connection with the incident. The couple, who are aged in their late 70s and early 80s, answered the door of their flat, on Kirkwhite Avenue, at around 5.20pm on Wednesday 4th November. He then tried to leave and as he did he pushed the elderly woman out of the way, and she also fell to the floor. The man is described as being white, around 5ft 8ins tall and in his 20s or 30s.

SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT NEW GRANT

Small businesses in Erewash that have not previously been eligible for COVID-19 support are being urged to apply right now for a new grant to help towards the impact of the recent lockdown. Erewash Borough Council wants to hear as soon as possible from those micro and small businesses that qualify for the so-called ARG support – an Additional Restrictions Grant – which opened on 1st December. Government funding has allowed all local authorities to draw up tailor-made criteria to help businesses in their community that do not pay business rates and were either forced to close during the latest national lockdown or which remained open but suffered a severe financial impact due to the restrictions. The funding is available as a one-off grant payment for eligible businesses that were trading on 4th November and were affected by the national restrictions between 5th November and 2nd December. Councillor Wayne Major, Erewash Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Resources, says:

“It is vital that we get the message out to the small and micro businesses in our community – you may qualify for a grant payment that could be a lifeline in these difficult times. We need to hear from you now so that we can, if you’re eligible, get this support out to you as quickly as possible. Please don’t delay, apply now.”

The ARG application form is available online at www.erewash.gov.uk Businesses should have a My Erewash business account to complete the application. An account can be set up via the website. The site will also give full details of the criteria for the Additional Restrictions Grant Scheme. Enquiries about the scheme can be emailed to localbusinessgrants@erewash.gov.uk

LONG EATON UNITED 3-2 STONE OLD ALLEYNIANS

                                                  BY ROB MCNEIL

Alex Marshall’s brace helped Long Eaton United equal their best ever FA Vase run as they edged past Stone Old Alleynians to progress into the Third Round.

Both sides scored almost identical goals in the first half, a low driven cross that required a tap in from Alex Marshall and Matthew Thomas respectively so that both sides went in level at half-time. Danny Gordon then put the Blues in front midway through the second half, before Ryan Goodwin equalised once again for the visitors and Alex Marshall got his second and the winner minutes before full-time. Ian Deakin boasted a very strong line-up, with the knowledge that the North West Counties Football League side are not one to be underestimated.

It took only four minutes for the Blues to open the scoring. Jamie Walker was alive and quickly intercepted a poor defensive clearance before he worked his way to the by-line and found Alex Marshall open inside the box for a comfortable tap in. Kameron Campbell had a chance to double the Blues’ lead minutes later, as a Jake Askew goal kick flew all the way to edge of the box and was controlled by the forward. He was then able to turn and strike venomously towards goal, but Adam Alcock saved well. Dominic Thorpe forced Askew into an incredible reaction save in the 20th minute when the midfielders thumping half volley was saved low by the palm of the Blues keeper. Old Alleynians equalised mid-way through the first half after Liam Hickson was able to work his way down the right and fire a cross to Thomas, open inside the box for an easy tap in.

A quiet end to the first half was then recovered by a feisty start to the second half, one that saw five yellow cards in 25 minutes. However, Long Eaton did take the lead in the 60th minute. Brad Wilson fired a cross into the box, and after a slight flick, Gordon was able to volley sweetly past Alcock at the far post. The Blues could have extended their lead minutes later when an initial Campbell strike was blocked, but Alex Marshall followed up only to blaze his effort over the bar. Hickson was then given too much time on the ball, as he worked his way down the right and into the box to shoot, but luckily for Askew, his strike flew way over the bar. The visitors equalised once again 10 minutes before full time after a cross pinballed inside the box and fell to Goodwin to strike with a half volley into the bottom right corner. But, with two minutes left on the watch, Alex Marshall clinched the Blues’ qualification into the third round of the FA Vase. Jamie Walker looped an exceptional corner towards the far post, and the unmarked Alex Marshall was simply allowed to direct the ball past the staggering keeper and into the back of the net with his chest.

MAGGIE SAYS BACK OUR HIGHSTREETS THIS CHRISTMAS

At the end of a hugely challenging year for our highstreets, Erewash MP Maggie Throup is urging residents across the Constituency to show their support for our independent retails and shop locally this Christmas. Issuing her call to arms, Maggie said:

“Despite the colossal financial support package that the Government has provided to businesses over the course of the pandemic, 2020 will certainly be a year to forget for our highstreets. The run-up to Christmas is a vital period for retailers, and although it will undoubtedly feel very different this year, I would urge residents across Erewash to make a special effort to support the local economy. Our market towns have a fantastic array of independent shops ready to supply you with everything you need for a bumper Christmas, from that extra-special gift for a loved one to a showstopping turkey. My message is clear – let’s do our bit to safeguard jobs and livelihoods here in Erewash, whilst also keeping safe and following the rules of hands, face, space.”
