BIN COLLECTIONS EREWASH

There will be no bin collections in Erewash on Bank Holiday Monday, September 19th due to the state funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Collections scheduled for Monday 19th September will now take place on Saturday 24th September. Residents whose collections would normally be on a Monday are kindly asked leave their bins out by 7am on September 24th.

Any trade collections due on Monday 19th September will be collected between Tuesday 20th September and Friday 23rd September. Business affected will be contacted. Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment at Erewash Borough Council, says:

“September 19th will be a bank holiday which will give as many people as possible the chance to mark Her Majesty’s passing. I’m sure that residents will understand that in these circumstances there will be no bin collections carried out on that day. These will instead be carried out on the Saturday, a day when collections do not usually take place.”

MATLOCK - NOTTINGHAM SERVICE TO RETURN

A petition signed by thousands of people is believed to be part responsible for a rail service to be reinstated. East Midlands Railways Matlock to Nottingham service, which stopped at Long Eaton station, was suspended back in 2021 as part of cutbacks involving 43 routes. It is expected to be reinstated at the next timetable change which is due in December. Passengers travelling to and from Matlock have been having to change at Derby.

Erewash MP Maggie Throup has welcomed the announcement describing it as "Great news" that the service would be reinstated from 11th December adding: "This is an important issue affecting a number of commuters in Erewash and one which I have raised directly with EMR, as well as my Ministerial colleagues at the Department for Transport.

EMR has now written to me [stating] that services will initially operate in both directions during the morning and evening peaks, Monday to Friday as well as continuing to run on Sunday. EMR has also signalled their intention to restore a full service in the New Year, something which I will continue to make the case for over the coming months.

PAY TRIBUTE IN EREWASH

Erewash Borough Council will follow the national protocol for local authorities at this very sad time in order that residents may show their respects in the borough.

  • Condolence books will be open at Ilkeston and Long Eaton town halls until the day following the State Funeral. A book of condolance is also available on the Palace's website.
  • The local Proclamation of the new monarch will be made by the Mayor of Erewash outside Ilkeston Town Hall at 2pm on Sunday 11 September.
  • Flags at Ilkeston and Long Eaton town halls will be lowered to half-mast. In line with the Principle Proclamation in London, flags will be raised to full-mast at 11am on Saturday 10 and returned to half-mast at 1pm on Sunday 11th September.
  • Floral tributes: For those residents who wish to lay floral tributes, an area has been set aside on the grassed banks approaching the war memorial at St Mary’s Church, Ilkeston and around the war memorial outside St Laurence’s Church on Long Eaton Market Place. Other items may be left inside the two churches where candles may be lit from 10am to 4pm. In lieu of floral tributes, those wishing to pay tribute can donate to a charity of their choice, one suggestion being the Royal British Legion.
  • A Service of Remembrance will be held at St Mary’s Church Ilkeston and St Laurence’s Church, Long Eaton on the evening prior to the State Funeral commencing at 6.30pm. Further information to follow.
  • A two minutes’ silence on the day of the funeral, should this be a working day, will be held at the Cenotaph, Ilkeston and the War Memorial, Long Eaton at 11am.

On the day following the funeral, all floral tributes will be sensitively removed and taken for composting. Flags will return to full mast and the condolence books closed.

MAYORS TRIBUTE

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor John Sewell, says the borough’s residents share the deep sadness felt by the nation at the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Following the announcement of the news, the Mayor said:

“On behalf of Erewash Borough Council and all our residents, may I say that we share the nation’s great sense of mourning. Queen Elizabeth had a long and remarkable life and will forever be remembered for her grace, her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service. This is a very poignant moment for the UK and the Commonwealth – and, indeed, the world – and we know residents in this borough will have their own special memories of the Queen, many from the countless royal visits she carried out in this country over the last 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II ruled for longer than any other monarch in British history and witnessed many key moments in history during her extraordinary reign. She was an important figurehead during times of enormous social change and travelled more widely than any other British monarch. Rest in peace your majesty.

Erewash Borough Council will follow the national protocol for local authorities at this very sad time in order that residents may show their respects in the borough. A book of condolance is available on the Palace's website. Books of Condolence have been opened at Ilkeston and Long Eaton Town Halls, while residents can also leave messages online via the council’s Facebook page.
