FISHING

WEDNESDAY “NISA” OPEN MATCH LAKE TWO
Makins Fishery sponsored by Tackle Guru
12th April 2023

1st    A15   Chris WAYTE (Coalville) 63-08
2nd  A13   Gary COOK      (Mosella UK) 58-09
3rd   A21   Clive OLIVER  43-12
4th   A18  John ADAMSON (Nisa Feeders)      33-15
5th   B21   Stuart GOULD (Rugby) 29-04

Once again we had rain!  Unfortunately, this time it was accompanied by a gale force and gusting SW wind, with intermittent sunshine and showers, sometimes heavy and with some hail stones.  Added to the fact that the temperature had dropped, this made fishing uncomfortable, to say the least, probably close to impossible.  However, the hardy souls battled through it and everyone caught fish, although there were only five remaining at their pegs to be weighed in.

Chris Wayte on peg A15 started on the method feeder, and although he had 2 or 3 early fish, as bites were slow coming he decided to switch to straight bomb and pellet.  This improved matters and he caught odd fish through to the end for a respectable weight of 63-08 for the win.

1st    A15   Chris WAYTE 63-08

2nd  A13   Gary COOK      58-09

On peg A13, Gary Cook also started on the method feeder fished towards the island.  This produced the odd fish for him throughout the day, and when bites eased off his switch to a bomb and pellet produced some bream and carp which boosted his weight to 58-09 for second place.

Clive Oliver on peg A21 had great difficulty casting his feeder accurately in the wind.  Hisperseverance paid off with 43-12 of carp to fill the third place.

John Adamson on A18 found the margins to his left were full of snags and with the rope in front gave up trying to fish a feeder.  He managed to fish pole and paste at 10m for short spells when the wind eased, which produced 11-13 of bream and 22-02 of carp during a one-hour window two-thirds through the match. His 33-15 took the fourth spot. Stuart Gould on peg B21 faced the weather all day.  He managed to fish a method feeder and by alternating with long and short casts he caught several carp for 29-04 and fifth place.

Many thanks to Stuart for his scalesmanship is getting people weighed in.  The photos (taken in once of the brief sunny periods after the match) show the top two.  Thankfully, the weather forecast is better for next week.  Let's hope they got it right!

NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM

The UK government’s new Emergency Alerts system is now live. The system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone when lives are in danger. On Sunday 23 April 2023 at 3pm, there will be a national test of the Emergency Alerts service. It will be used to warn you in the event of emergencies, such as severe flooding. Emergency Alerts are sent to all compatible mobile phones within an area of risk. They don’t track your location, need your phone number, or collect personal data. Only the government and the emergency services will be able to send them. If you don’t have a mobile phone, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.

If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to respond. You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine at gov.uk/alerts If you receive an alert, read the alert carefully and follow the instructions. You can opt out of receiving emergency alerts; for more information on how to opt out please go to gov.uk/alerts

Paid top four

Report:  It was good to be back on Lake Two after the recent closure for maintenance tasks, although the water levels were over a foot below normal and pegs A16 and A17 and the adjacent bank and pathway remained closed.  Peg A15 should have been fished but remained undrawn after an angler who had booked in failed to turn up.  To avoid this happening in future matches, anyone who has not "paid in" 10 minutes before the scheduled draw time will not have a peg reserved, unless they have telephoned before that time to assure their attendance. Back to the fishing - and as usual it rained throughout the day, mainly drizzle but occasionally harder, and with the SSW wind blowing down the lake, everyone was "pegged" with either a side or tailwind.  In spite of this, the whole lake fished well.

Winner Gary Cook

The top two both had the wind "off their backs" so were able to enjoy reasonable comfort, although both admitted to getting wet as they failed to don their waterproofs from the start. Gary Cook said at the draw that he wanted to fish peg A18, which stuck to his hand like a magnet.  He fished 14m of pole throughout the day and baiting with pellets he caught carp right from the start.  Most of his fish were caught at depth, with a few shallow, and his superb 122-04 made him a clear winner. Also pleased with his draw was Shane Sayers who drew A21.  Shane had a few fish on method feeder fished towards the island before switching to pole and catching in a similar fashion to the winner to put 105-07 on the scales for second place.

Ashley Prestige on peg A11 was on his first Nisa Open and enjoyed an excellent day's sport.  He caught carp on the method feeder fished to the island and alternated this with pole and corn short where he also caught carp and bream, giving him a total of 82-04 for third place.

When John Adamson's peg was drawn, two were left in the bag - flier peg A15 and B18.  The flier remained in the bag.  He was then late to his peg (thanks to the non-attender), spent much of the first 30 minutes tackling up, and the first two hours on the method feeder "biteless".  A switch to pole and paste produced a skimmer of around 6 ounces, quickly followed by a 3 lb bream, then another 20 minutes later.  Back on the feeder and a carp appeared, and then by switching between pole and feeder he caught to the end to put a fourth-placed 76-00 on the scales.

John England's fifth-placed 64-13 was mainly caught on corn fished short, Darren Hill's sixth-placed 63-04 was mainly carp on corn in the deep water in front of the tree, plus several skimmer bream on the feeder.  Steve Taylor's weight was mainly carp caught from the margin on maggots, while Martin Hincks has his fish on a hybrid feeder fished mainly in the deep water two-thirds towards the island.

Many thanks to Stuart Gould for his excellent scales-work, and to Gary Cook for assisting with scales carrying my nets back to the car park. NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
