RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PAYS

Funding has been awarded to the first three successful bidders to Erewash Borough Council’s new Research and Development Grant scheme. Precision Motorsport Components in Breaston, Medigarments in Long Eaton, and Comfa in Little Eaton were awarded the grants to help them develop their innovative projects. The awards were made to the most promising submissions received in order to help them develop their innovative projects to be market ready.

Alex Breene, Lead Member for Planning & Regeneration, says:

“These awards reflect the Council’s shared ambition with local businesses to deliver sustained economic growth for Erewash. We recognise economies globally and locally are both challenging and changing. Investment in Research & Development paves the way for a brighter future for the area.”

The Grant scheme has been designed to support local manufacturing enterprises in developing and piloting new products to help improve their businesses. Erewash based businesses can apply for grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 and are required to provide 33 per cent match-funding of the total value of each project. The scheme, which launched in April and will run until early 2025, is being operated by Erewash Borough Council and is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Details on the next round will be published on the council’s website at erewash.gov.uk/r&d once the council receives it next allocation of funding from the government.

In the overcast conditions with a cold East wind blowing, the carp seemed loath to feed and anglers all around the lake (the winner excepted) said that the bulk of their early catches consisted of bream, especially for those fishing the feeder.  It is likely that the temperature drop has affected the spawning patterns of the carp, hence their reticence to feed.

However, Steve Beard, fishing his first match on the lake on peg A6 was not disturbed by the bream at all.  Starting on the pellet waggler he caught carp steadily until his rod broke.  A switch to bomb and pellet in the same area kept the fish coming and he ended with a healthy 155-07 total for a clear win.

On peg A11, John Adamson had a slow start.  Fishing with his usual method feeder towards the island all he managed was a few bream, although after an hour or so the odd carp made an appearance.  That pattern continued and his final second placed 92-10 consisted of 26-05 of bream and the rest carp.

On the opposite bank on peg B19, the in-form "paste connoisseur" Clive Oliver also struggled with only bream on the feeder until the latter stages of the match when he found carp feeding in his left margin and the paste worked again to boost his weight to 91-05 and third place overall.

Shane Sayer (B17) had 31-05 of bream in his 82-10 total for fourth place, again his carp coming late from the margins, with Rob Lowe on A15 taking fifth place with a pole-caught bag of carp weighing 66-13, mainly on paste from his right margin, close to the A16 platform.  Ian Greenfield's 51-12 from peg A21 consisted of mainly pole-caught carp taken short and from his margins, although he suffered with several lost "foul hooked" fish during the day.

Many thanks to Rob Lowe for his scale duties - greatly appreciated.

Just a quick update on progress since my return to Makins in January this year.  I have now run twenty Wednesday Opens in 2023.  These have attracted 58 separate anglers, and we have an average attendance of ten per match.  There have been a total of 51 pool pay-outs and these have come from 18 different pegs, 9 of which are on each bank (A and B numbers), with the most successful being A15 (8 times), A21 (7 times) and B3 (5 times), although since the floating boom was removed pegs A15 and A21 have not been so dominant and fish have spread all around the lake.

NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

ST GEORGES DAY

Maggie joins Long Eaton Scouts for St George’s Day celebrations

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, joined Long Eaton Scouts for their St George’s Day celebrations. To celebrate England’s national day, the Scouts from Long Eaton, Sawley and Breaston paraded, with flags, through West Park to Trent College. Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers also got the opportunity to make their own dragon and witnessed a re-enactment of the story of St George and the Dragon.

Maggie commented: “I would like to thank Long Eaton Scouts for inviting me to their St George’s Day celebrations. Dragon making, followed by the re-enactment of the story of St George and the Dragon was lots of fun. It was a very different way to celebrate the Patron Saint for England and was a great activity for all ages. The celebrations brought the entire scout community together and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making the day a brilliant success.”

MAGGIE SUPPORTS SARCOMA AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, is calling on parents to understand the signs and symptoms of Sarcoma during Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Awareness Month. Sarcoma is a rare cancer of the soft tissue and bone. It is the third most common cancer in children, teenagers and young adults (CTYA) with one person from this group being diagnosed in the UK every day. As part of Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Awareness Month, Sarcoma UK held a parliamentary event on improving outcomes for children and young people with sarcoma.

Maggie commented: “I was pleased to attend Sarcoma UK’s parliamentary event and learn more about this type of cancer. CTYA Sarcomas are diagnosed late and are often missed or mistaken for other conditions such as growing pains or sports injuries. Clearly more needs to be done to raise awareness of this disease. Only seven per cent of the UK public know the signs and symptoms of Sarcoma. It is essential that we are able to educate the public and healthcare professionals about how to better recognise the signs and symptoms of Sarcoma. Earlier recognition of the signs of cancer in young people is critical as it means an individual and/or their parent are more likely to go to their GP and get a quicker diagnosis. If you are at all concerned, please visit your healthcare professional.”

More information about the signs and symptoms of Sarcoma can be found online here https://sarcoma.org.uk/about-sarcoma/.
