WALKING FESTIVAL

Walking Festival returns with 18 free guided walks

From 9th until 24th September the Autumn Footprints Walking Festival is offering free guided walks to celebrate and explore the beauty of Derbyshire. There are eighteen walks to choose from around Amber Valley that can be enjoyed free of charge. Whether you're an experienced hiker or just starting to explore the joys of walking, the event welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels.

Led by knowledgeable local volunteers and staff, the walks take place alongside rivers and canals, as well as through open countryside, towns and villages. Participants can explore the local heritage, natural history and wildlife of each area and get great insights by their guide.

The annual Festival is a collaboration between Amber Valley Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, and Groundwork Five Counties (formerly Groundwork Greater Nottingham).

Walking Festival Co-ordinator Marion Farrell, who is an expert walking guide of over 25 years at Groundwork, says: “Walking is incredibly important both for physical and mental wellbeing. By taking part in our guided walks, you’re bound to learn something you didn’t know and meet new people. “As lovers of nature, we are committed to preserving our environment. The festival follows eco-friendly practices to ensure minimal impact on the natural surroundings. We encourage participants to respect nature, dispose of waste responsibly, and leave only footprints behind. Last year, over 400 people took part in our Festival and we look forward to welcoming even more people this September.”

A variety of trails are available, ranging from leisurely strolls suitable for families to more challenging routes for seasoned adventurers. The walks are of varying lengths and gradient, from one to ten miles. Booking is advised for all walk and essential for some. CINEMA - COMPULSORY PURCHASE?

For 27 months Erewash Borough Council has been trying to buy the former Galaxy Row cinema, and a number of surrounding plots, in Derby Road, Long Eaton. Now the council is filing to compulsory purchase the former entertainment venue from the owner. The Council has made at least three formal offers for the site, but these have been rejected by the owner leaving the former cinema on the market for £575,000. Negotiations are continuing.
The council have submitted a planning application to itself to demolish the former cinema, along with a shop, garage and nightclub, to make way for four houses, 16 flats and three shops. The project will be entirely funded by a £25 million Government Town Deal grant awarded in 2021.

COST OF LIVING PLAN

Erewash Borough Council has created a plan of action to help residents through the cost-of-living crisis. The cost-of-living action plan, that looks set to be approved by Council Executive on September 5, brings together support from the council and community partners, such as Citizens Advice and Erewash Voluntary Action, for struggling households. The action plan has six key themes around support that is available. These are: information and advice; help with energy costs; supporting everyday living expenses; support with housing; financial support, and community grants. Councillor Becca Everett, Deputy Leader of Erewash Borough Council and Lead Member for Community Engagement, says:

“The cost-of-living crisis is impacting all households across the country with those on the lowest incomes and the least disposable income being hit the hardest. In recognition of this, the council has developed a partnership cost-of-living action plan to set out the local response which complement’s steps being taken at a national level to support struggling households.”

Melanie Mallinson, Senior Operations Manager at Citizens Advice Derbyshire Districts, saysWe are working with the council to help Erewash residents through the cost-of-living crisis. We know that people are having to make cutbacks and we can provide people with advice on energy bills, benefits, debt and money issues, as well as debt housing and access to grants.”

Stella Scott, Chief Executive Officer of Erewash Voluntary Action, saysWe are a community voluntary service which provides a range of services for residents and community groups to help them through difficult times. This includes supporting voluntary and community groups by providing training, networks and funding advice. Our other services include the Derbyshire Mental Health Forum and Social Prescribing, to reduce isolation and loneliness.”

The council is committed to supporting people through the cost-of living. Information and advice can be found on the cost-of-Living tab of erewash.gov.uk Head to citizensadvicederbyshiredistricts.org.uk or erewashvoluntaryaction.org.uk
