In the very hot and sticky conditions, the fish in Lake Two appeared to be more interested in sunbathing than feeding, with fish showing just under the surface throughout the daySport, as a result, was hard, and this was reflected in the weights with some anglers not bothering to weigh in.

Jake Hemmings, fishing his first Nisa Open this year, drew peg A21He began by targeting the carp near the surface with a pellet waggler and ended up catching fish from the edge on the pole for a total weight of 110-11 to win.

On peg B21, Aaron Braithwaite also stated on the pellet waggler, and despite trying to catch on pole both short and long, found that the pellet waggler was the only method that worked and his 12 carp caught like that totalled 94-11 for second place.

Match organiser Shaun Weed on peg B19 fished the pole shallow all day, and accumulated a total of 67-04 to take third place, just ahead of Tony Rathmill on peg A8, who narrowly missed out with 66-01.

Unfortunately, there are no catch photos this weekMy thanks to Shaun Weed for running the event in my absence, and to Rob Lowe, our excellent scales operative, for his quick and efficient weighing.

NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

NEW ADVICE SERVICE

Residents get new advice service as Erewash chases Council Tax debts

Erewash Borough Council has teamed up with an independent free debt advice service for residents who are behind with their Council Tax. The partnership with MAPS – the Money and Pensions Service – was launched as 3,300 final reminders were sent out for arrears dating back as far as 2017

Those who fail to pay face summonses and additional costs within weeks unless they make urgent arrangements to address what they owe. The council is stressing it is important for people not to ignore correspondence. Details of the MAPS service – which is a gateway to a network of debt advice agencies – are on the council’s website. People can also use this link: adviser.moneyhelper.org.uk

The service is for customers with personal debts – not business debt. By filling in a referral form, people will get a call back from independent debt advisors to assess income, expenditure and other information. This will allow approved debt agencies to provide solutions and a way out of arrears. Councillor Gordon Thomas, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Resources, said: “We appreciate people are struggling amid the cost-of-living crisis. The council is committed to doing all it can to help but has a duty to be fair to all residents by ensuring everyone who should pay Council Tax does so. Our link-up with the MAPS service will help bring vital peace of mind to those in financial straits.”

CHILDRENS WING AT TREETOPS

Council answers Big Build SOS from BBC’s Children in Need

This year’s BBC Children in Need Big Build is now officially ON – thanks to Erewash council planners answering an SOS from the TV team behind it. Work to construct a new children’s wing at Risley’s Treetops Hospice will get under way on September 10th after the borough pulled out all the stops to grant green belt consent. The build will be completed from scratch in an amazing ten days. Tight deadlines for filming meant the project could only go ahead if a crunch planning meeting was brought forward. The committee had previously been due to meet later in the month, which would have been too late for Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS crew. The last hurdle to the new counselling and therapy hub in the hospice’s grounds has now been cleared (Wednesday, 6 September). The wing will be built by an army of volunteers as a centre for traumatically bereaved children and families.

The DIY SOS show is teaming up with Radio 2 presenters for the flagship project, which will be screened during BBC Children in Need Appeal week in November.

TV’s Nick said as local tradespeople flocked to donate materials and volunteer to help with the build: “It’ll be a blast.”

Jules Kirk, who is the therapeutics services manager at Treetops, said the charity was “absolutely over the moon” to get the new wing.

She said: “Every year we provide over 900 counselling sessions for local children, some as young as seven, who are struggling after the death of a loved one.

“Many of our young clients have experienced unexpected or traumatic bereavements including accidents, suicide and murder. This centre will make an immeasurable difference to hundreds of children and their families in our local community.”

Councillor Alex Breene, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Town Centres, Regeneration and Planning, said: “The council supports this project wholeheartedly. Treetops does magnificent work and is a fantastic asset to the borough.”

NEW LIDL STORE

New Lidl store at Long Eaton
The Lidl store at West Point Shopping Centre in Chilwell has been put up for sale for £1.5 million. The retailer said the closure was due to relocation and the Chilwell store will close when new premises open a mile away in Long Eaton. The new store is currently being built along with a branch of Wickes at a four-acre site off Nottingham Road, Long Eaton, which has been derelict since 2014.
