Report:

A run of cold nights preceded the match, and once again anglers were faced with a bitterly cold, gusting and strong NW wind, and although at times the sky promised rain it thankfully remained dry for the duration of the matchSuch conditions are not conducive to good sport, and many of the “sell-out field” struggled for bites on what proved to be a hard day.

The payout was to the top three individuals and then to two default sections (A bank + peg B1, and B bank).

The exception was Tony Lamb on peg A13, who managed to catch decent-sized carp steadily throughout the day for his winning 151-01, and a good payoutI understand that Tony caught on a bomb and “pellet-cone” cast just short of halfway to the island, leaving the anglers on either side, Shaun Weed (on A15) and Andy Findlay (on A11) way behind.

Second place on the day was John Adamson from peg A18, with 106-15 (all carp) taken on the method feederJohn was facing the cold wind which appeared to have moved the fish away from the top end of the lake, which normally produced fish “short”.  Using a 28g Nisa Porky method feeder, John found a small clear spot among the snags caused by the bank collapse,  and casting into that same spot managed to tempt the odd fish over the first 4 hoursIn the fifth hour, he caught steadily before slowing over the final hour.

Shaun Weed on peg A15 had a strange dayHe was fish-less after the first 4 hours before fish moved into his margin in the final 2 hours when he caught decent carp until the final whistle on the short pole and pellet for 83-12, which was just enough to push Andy Findlay (83-03 from A11) out of the main moneyAndy caught mainly small carp on a method feeder cast (crosswind) towards the island, which proved sufficient for him to take the A section money.

The B bank generally fished much harder, and the battle to win the section proved to be between Matt Gaetto (peg B24) and Gaz Kitch (B17), both of whom fished mainly on the method feederIn the end, it was Matt who came out on top with a catch of eight carp for a weight of 52-03, against Gaz’s 47-15 (which included several decent bream).

Many thanks (especially to Matt) to all who assisted with the weigh-in.  The photos show the prizewinners.

Next week’s match will be on Wednesday 24th April, as the Makins Fishery Three-Day Festival will not include Lake TwoThere will be no match on Tuesday (which we thought may be a necessity).

MAGGIE CALLS FOR MPs BACKING

Maggie calls for MPs to back landmark Bill that tackles smoking and vaping

Maggie Throup OBE MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash, recently pledged her support to a landmark Bill that will create a smokefree generation and tackle underage vaping.  The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which had its Second Reading on 16 April, is a Government Bill that will prohibit the sale of tobacco to people born on or after 1 January 2009, and will impose product requirements in connection with tobacco, vapes and other products. Maggie, who has been a leading campaigner on these issues, has been urging the Government to introduce legislation to create a smokefree generation and tackle underage vaping. During the Second Reading of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, Maggie made a powerful intervention as to why Parliament must act now.

Maggie said: “Through the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, the UK can take another significant step towards becoming smokefree which will safeguard the health and well-being of millions more people across the country from the threat of smoking related diseases. By supporting this Bill and incrementally raising the age of sale of tobacco by one year every year, the Government can eliminate smoking among the under 30s by 2050. Through this legislation, we can ensure that children turning 15 or younger this year will never legally be sold or become addicted to nicotine.

This Bill also tackles the rise of underage vaping. Whilst I believe that vaping is an effective aid to quit smoking, many young people are being given these products, containing nicotine, and are becoming addicted to them. This is down to a clever ploy by tobacco manufacturers who are marketing vapes as fashion accessories.

These vapes, which come in a variety of different colours and a range of flavours, appeal to young people and as I describe them are like confectionary. I am pleased that there are measures in the Tobacco and Vapes Bill that will regulate the packaging of vaping and nicotine products. These regulations will restrict the colours and imagery that can be used on retail products of vapes. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is the single biggest public health intervention in a generation. Now is the time for MPs from across the House of Commons to back this Bill for the sake of public health, the economy and our NHS.”

TRAFFIC CHAOS IN LONG EATON

Multiple roadworks around Long Eaton and Sawley have caused traffic chaos on Monday and Tuesday with some drivers reporting journeys taking over an hour more than usual. Derbyshire County Council said National Grid emergency cable works in Sawley near Long Eaton Railway Station have had a major impact. A spokesman said: "These were not planned works and were the result of an emergency and resulted in five-way temporary traffic lights." The work was due to be completed on Tuesday. In addition four roads were shut in Long Eaton due to planned works and a fallen tree blocked Tamworth Road on Monday, Trentbarton says it has been experiencing 85-minute delays to its Indigo and my15 service through the area.

GLAMPING PLANS REJECTED  A Stapleford glamping site's expansion plans have been rejected over worries they would create "unacceptable" noise and damage the greenbelt. Meadow View glamping site, in Mill Road, had applied to both increase its opening hours and build two new bungalows along with road improvements. The plans were turned down by the Government's Planning Inspectorate after an appealed against Broxtowe Borough Councils earlier decision.

PEWIT LAND SALE

Residents who feared part of a former golf course could be sold to developers have learned from council chiefs that it WON’T – and that ALL the land will be turned into a new nature reserve for the community. The reassurance came at a town hall meeting in Ilkeston where Erewash’s leader Cllr James Dawson met with his cabinet over the future of the town’s disused Pewit municipal course. The executive team officially rejected an option that would have seen between eight and nine acres earmarked for disposal while the rest is transformed into a wildlife haven. The decision on Tuesday 16th April clears the way for the entirety of the land – some 25 acres – to become a tranquil beauty spot right on the edge of town.

More than £500,000 will be invested in creating what will be called Pewit Coronation Meadows Local Nature Reserve. The cash is NOT coming from council tax. Half is government levelling-up investment through what is called the Shared Prosperity Fund. The rest is money paid to the town hall by businesses involved in the redevelopment of the old Stanton ironworks.

The under-used golf course at West End Drive closed in 2022. Work on transforming it into a nature reserve is poised to start soon in what is the council’s golden anniversary year. Natural England and the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust have welcomed the council’s blueprint for the land. The reserve will form an extension of existing green havens including Straw’s Bridge – celebrated for its Swan Lake. One element of the plan could see the course’s former pavilion building become an educational centre and coffee shop.
