Report:

Had it not been for the bitterly cold North wind it would have been a pleasant day, as it was cloudy with sunny periods, and, for a change, it remained dry. Although Makins “Spring Three-Day Festival” was also being held, and there was a “Fishomania” qualifier elsewhere (both of which had some of our regular attendees fishing) we still had a decent attendanceHowever, not being a “sell-out” enabled more spacing between pegs so everyone had loads of room. Unfortunately, the persistent cold North wind seems to have kept many carp shoaled up in the high A numbers, and once again these pegs dominated the resultsHowever, introducing a bank section pool continues to give the anglers on the B-bank interest until the fish spread around the lake. The payout was to the top two individuals and two default sections. Despite two “DNWs” (both caught fish), weights averaged over 65 lbs per angler. The top weight came from peg A18, where Gaz Kitch caught 154-00 of carp to record his first Nisa Open winGaz has been a very consistent prize-winner and checking back I was very surprised to see this was his first win at our matchesHe caught at a steady rate throughout the match, first on the method feeder fished to the post, and then later on the pole and pellet fished towards the corner of the lake. John Adamson on peg A13 was a close runner up, ending one fish short of the winner with a weight of 148-04, with all his fish falling to method feeder fished at rangeAfter a decent carp on his first cast, he had to wait over 2 hours for his second fish (his only bream), and he caught over 100 lbs during the last 2 hours. John Lack on A21 filled third place with 108-12 taken on the method feeder, and although he matched the winner fish for fish in the early stages his catch rate slowed in the last two hoursThis took the “A” Section money. Rob Henrick (A15) failed to get much response on the method feeder so he switched to pole short with meat and in his marginAs the match progressed his catch rate improved and his fourth placed 107-00 left him a bare 1-12 short of a prize. Philip Aldridge on A7 had the bulk of his fifth placed 58-06 short on the method feeder, whereas Peter Stockwin (A11) caught his (also method feeder) by casting long. The winner of the B bank pool was seventh placed Phil “Bagger” Hunt, with a seven carp catch weighing 45-02 from peg B23Phil caught one from his margin on the pole and the other six in the last hour on the method feeder, just enough to sneak the lead over Rob Mallabone (B20), who accumulated 39-14 of carp and bream switching between pole and feeder throughout the match.

Many thanks to John Lack (and later Gaz Kitch) for their scales-work.

SICKNOTE CULTURE

Maggie backs the Government’s Welfare Plan ending Britain’s “sicknote culture”

Maggie Throup OBE MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash has welcomed the Government’s Plan for Welfare, which will tackle the unprecedented rise in economic inactivity and ensure that Britain’s benefits system is better targeted at those who need it most. The Government has taken significant steps over the last 14 years to reform the broken welfare system that was inherited from Labour. The Government has put work at the heart of welfare through Universal Credit and is boosting pay by cutting taxes for 27 million working people. Despite this progress, new challenges have emerged since the pandemic, specifically the UK seeing a drastic rise in the number of people being ‘economically inactive.’ Today 2.8 million people across the country are ‘economically inactive’ due to long term sickness which has in large part been driven by mental health conditions. That is why the Government is unveiling a package of welfare reform measures to tackle the unprecedented rise in economic inactivity and ensure our benefits system is better targeted at those who need it most. The eight-point plan for welfare includes reforming the fit note system, strengthening the sanctions regime, reviewing the disability benefit system, and investing £6 billion to get people into work.

Maggie said: “Since the Pandemic we have seen a worrying trend in our welfare system. More people are being written off work unnecessarily, and spending is growing at an unsustainable rate. I welcome the Government’s decisive plan for a new welfare settlement founded on the lasting British values of generosity and compassion but also a system that is ambitious for all those who want to work. I know this announcement will be well received by people across Erewash. The reforms will give Erewash residents the help they need in their return to and stay in work. Whilst the Conservatives are sticking to the plan to get more people into work and are growing the economy, Labour still cannot say how they would tackle economic inactivity because they do not have a plan, taking us back to square one.”

COUNCIL TURNS 50

Flares make comeback. .. as council turns 50

FLARES will be making a comeback this month – as a 1970s fancy dress extravaganza is staged to coincide with the 50th birthday of the borough of Erewash and Erewash Borough Council. The afternoon retro party is being held on Saturday 27 April and will feature a live band “for the whole family to enjoy”. The venue is the Erewash Museum, which has issued a free invitation to local people saying: “Come in your best 70s fancy dress, bring a chair and a blanket – as well as some dancing shoes – for a day of nostalgia.” The music starts in the grounds at noon and lasts until 4pm. Retro art workshops and “old school activities” will also be taking place at the heritage and culture hub in Ilkeston. Erewash Borough Council came into being in April 1974 when a local government shake-up merged three separate councils into one. While memories of that are likely to be hazy, many will remember something else that happened at the time – ABBA winning the Eurovision song contest. The Swedish band stormed to victory in Brighton with their hit song Waterloo. The track went on to be a No1 smash. But the song that reached the top of the pop charts in the first week of April was Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks – after he dislodged Paper Lace, who were from Nottingham. Their song Billy Don’t Be A Hero had been No1 for three weeks.

The Erewash Museum near Ilkeston Market Place is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free.

CHURCH WILNE ROTARY CLUB

Church Wilne Rotary Club Speaker Evening

Chris Tew’s trip to the Antarctica

President Nigel welcomed Chris Tew to our speaker evening, talking about his recent trip to the Antarctic. He and Andrea travelled on the Viking Cruise Line, the ship carrying only 300 passengers but housed 20 Zodiacs (inflatable boats with outboard motors). Two Special Operations Boats and two 6 person submarines, which could dive to 1,000 feet. The ship also had a laboratory where scientists studied water and seabed quality sending data to colleagues around the world. Chris and Andrea had access to the boats and submarine, they attended regular talks on the wildlife, conservation and the areas they visited.

Crossing the “Drake Passage” where the Atlantic, Pacific & Antarctic Oceans collide was “interesting”, the ship battled 25 foot waves. In Antarctica they saw lots of wildlife, including three types of penguins, Gentoo, Adelie & Chinstrap. Two types of whales, Finn and Humpbacks. Icebergs where a stunning sight, parts of them are bright blue. As they melt, they get top heavy and can flip over. Chris & Andrea, consider themselves very fortunate to get the opportunity to visit the Antarctica.
