CHURCH WILNE ROTARY CLUB

Rotary Club of Church Wilne, a taste of India.

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne recently went to the Rajni Indian Restaurant in Borrowash, enjoying a great social night good turnout with 30 members, wives and girlfriends. A real change with no regalia and talks, just a good ol’ fashioned full social evening, some with some tasty, if not burning dishes!!!!  For more information about our club and its activities or you can email the Secretary at rccw1200@gmail.com

MAGGIE PRAISES BUDGET

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, praised the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Budget in a parliamentary debate. The Chancellor delivered a budget focusing on the Prime Minister’s priorities of halving inflation, growing the economy and reducing debt.

Commenting Maggie said: “I very much welcome the measures announced in the Chancellor’s Budget. The feedback that I have received from constituents across Erewash has been very positive with descriptions such as measured, considered, logical. The Budget shows that the Conservatives, as ever, are the party of economic growth and opportunities. I especially welcome the £60 million of new support for public swimming pools. I trust that this will be distributed fairly to ensure that swimming pools like those at West Park Leisure Centre in Long Eaton and Victoria Leisure Centre in Ilkeston can continue to be used by my constituents to support both their physical and mental health.”

On Monday 20th March 2023, the Budget debate continued, with a particular focus on Science and Technology. The Chancellor announced that the Government is providing £10 million of funding in 2023-24 to 2024-25 to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), allowing the regulator to maximise Brexit freedoms and accelerate patient access to treatments. In her speech in the House of Commons, Maggie supported the decision to award this extra funding to the MHRA, saying:

“I was particularly pleased to see that the MHRA will receive £10 million in funding. The MHRA is a world-leading regulator, and the extra funding will help with their ongoing innovation work and accelerate the development of ground-breaking recognition routes. This will undoubtedly give UK patients faster access to the most cutting-edge medical products in the world. It is also great news that the Government will create and deliver 12 new investment zones across England. I am pleased that the East Midlands has been chosen as a hub. This will help drive business investment and levelling up, as well as bringing well paid jobs to the region. The UK is on track to become a world-leading science superpower and I welcome the measures within the Budget that will help us achieve this vision.”

BENNERLEY VIADUCT

Maggie visits Bennerley Viaduct Exhibition at the Erewash Museum

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, was delighted to attend the launch of the Bennerley Viaduct pop-up exhibition at the Erewash Museum. The exhibition, which runs from 11-25 March, enables visitors to find out more about the viaduct’s history and that of the communities that are part of the Iron Giant’s story. Maggie commented:

“It was fantastic to be at the opening of the Iron Giant pop-up exhibition at the fabulous Erewash Museum. This historic piece of infrastructure is an important feature at the heart of our community. I would like to thank the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct for putting on this exhibition and for sharing the viaduct’s important significance to the community. The Erewash Museum and Bennerley Viaduct are both worth visiting! I know that the pop-up event will be popular for all age groups, and if you haven’t already done so, I would encourage residents to visit the exhibition before it finishes at the end of the month.

A range of events will be held on the weekends of the 18th and 25th March. On Saturday March 18th, between 11am and 3pm, there will be a free bridge building challenge alongside bridge-building games for families. A memory sharing morning will be held on Saturday March 25, between 10am and 1pm. People will be able to share stories about Bennerley Viaduct, take their photos or artefacts along, see the exhibition and chat with volunteer historians.

VISIT EREWASH CAMPAIGN

People will be encouraged to Visit Erewash as part of an Erewash Borough Council led project. The aim of the project is to boost the profile of Erewash and its existing attractions, including the promotion of its outdoor trails. The scheme is one of a number of projects being rolled out by the council over the next two years following a successful bid to the Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. Erewash is thought to often be overlooked as a destination for day trips from the surrounding areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The council will be researching and running a marketing campaign to promote the borough’s rural leisure and recreational attractions and realise its potential as a day trip destination.

Councillor Bryn Lewis, Lead Member for Town Centres says: “Erewash is home to many quality visitor attractions as well as some beautiful green spaces, countryside and waterways, such as the Erewash Canal, Bennerley Viaduct and the Nutbrook Trail. This campaign will shine a light on these places and inspire more people to visit and enjoy everything our fantastic borough has to offer.”

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025. The Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.

HIGH STREET TO BE REVITALISED

Erewash Borough Council looks set to progress its submission to Government to secure funding for improvements to the Long Eaton High Street. The Long Eaton Town Deal project aims to revitalise the commercial centre of Long Eaton through environmental and aesthetic improvements to increase footfall and support shops and services by making it a more welcoming high street. This would see improvements made along the High Street from Market Place to Cross Street/Main Road, as well as improvements to the environment along Market Place and Tamworth Road, between Oxford Street and Broad Street.

It is recommended that Council Executive endorses the project summary and to claim the remainder of the £10,231,500 Towns Fund capital grant for the project. If approved at the March 21 meeting, a Summary Document will be submitted to government to claim the funding, with the project planned to be delivered by March 2026. Councillor Bryn Lewis, Lead Member for Town Centres, says: “Improving the offer for shops and services was identified through public engagement as the number one priority for Long Eaton and therefore an important project as part of the Long Eaton Town Deal. Of all of the Town Investment Plan interventions it is the Long Eaton High Street Project that has the greatest potential to address this.”

On July 7th, 2021 council executive  approved heads of terms with the government to deliver projects in the Long Eaton Town Investment Plan using the £24.8 million of Town Deal funding. More information about the Long Eaton Town Deal can be found at www.longeatontowndeal.org
