CHURCH WILNE ROTARY

Rotary Club of Church Wilne, Speaker Evening Ellie Perry - Flooding, Sacremento and the joys of Covid.

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne recently welcomed Ellie Perry to its speaker evening. What a treat, we were taken through Ellie’s life over the last three years. During her Physica Geography degree course at Hull University, she had the opportunity to study for a year at California State University Sacramento.  Getting used to their culture, three and a half hour long football games, cheer leaders, marching bands, living in a “Dorm” with 4 girls from California, studying California’s diverse geography and specialising in Climate Change and the ways of protecting ourselves from changing weather patterns.

Covid interrupted her studies, with the move to online learning and the need to leave the university campus. She returned to Hull University to complete her 4 year degree. Ellie triumphed gaining a first class honours degree. She now works with a local company and supports the Environment Agency, specialising in our defences against flooding, from local rivers. Thanks.

Paid Top Four

ReportThe well-attended competition on Lake Two had to withstand a cold East wind throughout the day, but the good news was that, for the first time in a while, there was no rain.  The other good news was that the lake fished well and produced decent weights from all areas.

Aaron Morton drew peg A15, and with A16 and A17 not being used as the bank is unsafe, had a huge area to exploit.  Starting on pellet waggler, Aaron was soon into carp by casting to cruising fish, and by the time sport eased after the first hour, he must have had close to 100 pounds of fish in his net.  He then switched to his right margin (towards A16/17), and alternating between waggler and bomb, continued to catch carp, only delayed when he was "scrounging" two extra keepnets, having already filled the four he had with him.  At the final weigh-in, he recorded a weight of 281 pounds for a clear win.

Clive Oliver on peg A18 had a quiet start to his match, and it was only when the winner's catch rate eased that the fish ventured down to Clive who had a superb end, catching on paste from his left margin with the odd fish on method feeder to total 129-13 for second place. At the other end of the lake, John Adamson did not really fancy peg B1 to produce a great deal, and at the end of the first hour, he only had one carp of around 4 lbs to report. By the end of the second hour, he had added two more, and then sport improved, and he caught carp steadily on method feeder until the final hour when things slowed up.  However, his 111-10 was sufficient to take third place.

Shane Sayers was on his usual peg A21, and alternating between feeder and pole, including his margins, he managed to again top the ton with 100-08 for fourth place, although he was closely followed by Shaun Weed (peg A11), whose 99-12 came mostly in the latter stages on pole and pellet fished short, and Chris Wayte (B21) whose 99-07 was mostly made up with method feeder fish although he added several from his margin on corn in the latter stages. Jon Arthur (B19) included 37-12 of bream in his pole caught 7th placed 67-13, Rob Lowe's 61-04 from peg A6 was mostly caught from the margin on corn, while Gary Lees' 61-03 of big carp fell to meat fished on a waggler in the margins.

Many thanks to some superb scales operating by Rob Lowe anglers managed to get away quickly at the end of the match.  My apologies to Aaron and Clive for my bankside errors in adding their weights.  Checking the weights at home, Aaron gained one pound fro his initial 280, and Clive lost 10 pounds.  Neither closely affected the overall results (when weights are close a double and treble check my maths on the bank). The photos show the top anglers with part of their catches.

NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME PROJECT

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash recently visited an energy efficient home project on Bunting Close, Kirk Hallam. As part of a drive to increase the number of energy efficient homes across the country, E.ON are working with local authorities, including Erewash Borough Council, to install around £34 million of upgrades to around 4,000 homes across the country. E.ON’s collaboration with Erewash Borough Council will deliver £1.1 million of Government Sustainable Warmth Competition funding up to June 2023. As part of these works, 15 properties on Bunting Close and surrounding roads are being upgraded and provided with External Wall Insulation. The residents living in these properties will now benefit from warmer homes and lower energy bills.

Maggie commented: “It was really interesting to visit the home upgrades on Bunting Close. The site visit provided me with an opportunity to engage with residents, meet local installers and talk about the benefits of energy efficient homes. Thanks to the Government’s multi-million-pound investment into the delivery of local green home improvements, the residents on Bunting Close are now experiencing the long-term benefits of greener, cheaper and more energy efficient homes. I would like to thank E.ON for arranging the site visit and I hope more residents will be interested in the energy efficient home upgrade scheme in the future.”
