EREWASH BACKS ASB

From rowdiness and noisy neighbours to vandalism and littering, anti-social behaviour can be a scourge in our community – which is why Erewash Borough Council is backing ASB Awareness Week at the start of July.

The nationwide crusade aims to empower citizens and highlight what action can be taken and how everyone can play their part. The initiative runs until 9th July. Residents may notice an increase in communications from agencies about ASB, or see additional officers in neighbourhoods. The aim of the week is to ensure everyone knows how to get the advice they need. Erewash residents can access the Derbyshire ASB Hub, which provides clear advice on who can help and what to expect. Visit www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk/asbhub for more information.

In addition, as part of the campaign and the Safer Streets initiative, a free “family fun day” is taking place in Cotmanhay. Erewash council has worked in partnership with Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner to help stage the event on Saturday 8th July at the Cotmanhay Pavilion and Playing Fields from 10am to 3pm. There will be inflatables, bubbles workshops and circus skills lessons for kids.

Deputy Council Leader Becca Everett, Erewash’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, says: “We know anti-social behaviour is something residents are rightly concerned about. Tackling it in partnership with other organisations has to be a priority. To combat anti-social behaviour the council is creating a brand new post dedicated to engaging with communities.”

NEW FRAUD CAMPAIGN

“Alright, love. Listen, that call sounds like a scam.”  These are the first words of advice spoken by our pink and perky sock puppet Claude, the face of our new fraud-fighting campaign. He’s bright pink, with a shock of yellow hair, a blue nose and four goofy teeth – all of which make him quite a memorable mascot…

Claude’s mission is to #SockItToTheScammers by raising awareness of sophisticated scams, and to try and prevent the long-term stress and financial loss that fraud victims endure. And to do that, the puppet has three simple tips: Stop! Think! Tell!  Now, we know this might not be the most conventional crime-fighting campaign – but with fraud reports continually on the rise, we want to try something different. Our aim is to get the videos in front of as many people as we can, in the hope that not only will they be alerted to the tactics of fraudsters, but that they will also share the crime prevention tips and advice with family, friends and neighbours who might not be online.

While older people and those who are more vulnerable can be targeted by scammers, we know that they are not alone, and anyone can become a victim to these types of scams. The launch comes as criminals continue to target people here in Derbyshire, with one courier fraud victim being tricked out of nearly £20,000 by scammers pretending to be from her bank.

Tammy Barnes, Derbyshire Constabulary’s Fraud Protect Officer, said: “The impact these crimes have on victims really cannot be understated. People are tricked into putting their faith in the person at the other end of the phone and when that faith is shattered, their whole world just grinds to a halt. We commonly see most victims regardless of age, can be scared, embarrassed, and often confused as to how it could have so easily happened to them. They’re just absolutely devastated to have fallen for it. That’s why we need to try something completely different with Claude, so we can make sure people know how they can protect themselves when a fraudster targets them – because the likelihood is, at some point, they will.”

Each short clip will focus on a different type of fraud, with the first one on courier fraud. You can watch the video on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/y_z2CTIxwiI

 Report:

Another good turnout enjoyed a good day's sport, helped by the fact that the Fishery staff had trimmed back the foliage on the islands and removed as many snags as they were able to identify.

Goerge Robinson, fishing his first Nisa Open was on peg A11 and had an excellent match to win on the day with a superb 203-12.  He started on the method feeder, then switched to slapping on the long pole, and pellet waggler, before concentrating on pole short and pole in the margins in the latter stages to keep putting fish into his nets.

John  Adamson on peg A15 fished method feeder for the whole match to amass a weight of 191-00 of carp for second place, with Ricky Arms (peg B17) in third with 165-07 and Shane Sayers (B14) in fourth both catching on the method feeder before switching to pole and paste on the margins in the latter stages.

Tom Calladine was fifth on peg B21 (mainly on the method feeder) with Oliver Sleath taking sixth place from peg B7, catching his fish late from the margins on pole and paste. Many thanks to Rob Lowe for weighing in.  Photos show the top two.

NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

MAGGIE WELCOMES £5 MILLION FUNDING

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash welcomes the announcement that patients who use Nottingham University Hospitals are set to benefit from almost £5 million awarded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to pay for cutting-edge research equipment and technology. More than £4.6 million has been awarded to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to fund new imaging equipment, such as a CT scanner, a mobile echocardiogram to perform scans of the heart and nearby blood vessels, and an imaging machine for skeletal health assessments.

Maggie commented: “I welcome the announcement that almost £5 million in funding has been awarded to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The additional funding will mean that the Trust can now purchase cutting-edge equipment, like mobile CT scanners, imaging devices and ultrasound equipment to help their ground-breaking work in the prevention, treatment and management of disease. This announcement is on top of the recent news that the Nottingham University Hospitals will receive an investment of £13.2 million from the Government to support elective care. I have no doubt that this funding will drive research and innovation to enable scientific discoveriesand new technologies to improve the prevention, management and treatment of serious and long term conditions. This will certainly help improve patient experiences and once again shows that the Conservatives are the party of the NHS."

Additionally, a further £300,000.00 has also been awarded to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to fund equipment that will support collaborative research, in partnership with Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, into muscle and movement disorders in children. The new equipment is backed by £96 million of NIHR funding being invested in 93 NHS organisations across England.
