A campaign has been launched to save the Long Eaton railway station's ticket office. Councillor Alan Chewings, who is the Chair of Sawley Parish Council, said: "It is a lifeline for the disabled people living in Long Eaton and Sawley, as well as the elderly. Not everyone has a smartphone to buy a ticket. And it feels like the old and disabled people are left behind.”
He said that having this station among the ones that are now put into consultation is a "mockery". People fighting for the future of the ticket office at the station are expected to show up at the station to show their support at 10.30am on Saturday, July 15, which will be followed by a petition.,
An EMR spokesperson said: “In the mid 90s over 80 percent of all tickets were sold at ticket offices, compared to just 12 percent nationally and less than 5 percent at EMR stations on average today.”
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “This is not about cutting jobs, no station which is currently staffed will be unstaffed as a result of these proposed reforms.”
