SUMMER SOUNDS

Summer Sounds is back . . so Take That picnic along to Ilkeston ‘Glasto’

Music lovers who missed out on Glastonbury will be doing a double take in Erewash this July – as Take That, Kylie and Marti Pellow star in Ilkeston’s answer to the Worthy Farm extravaganza. The annual free Summer Sounds festival in Victoria Park features a top line-up of tribute acts. Families are invited to bring picnics for what promises to be pop-tastic day out on Sunday, 23rd July. There will be stalls and fun for all the kids with a special guest star – Jolly Jingles the clown. Face painting is available for £5.

The festival between 3pm and 7pm is centred on the iconic bandstand and will be opened by new Mayor of Erewash Cllr Frank Phillips and his wife Pamela.

Gary Barlow lookalike Dean Barratt and his Take@That gang are the day’s headliners – and have become regulars at Summer Sounds. He said: “It’s great to be back again.” The boys will take the stage at 6pm following Kylie at 5:10pm and “Marti Pellow” at 4:10pm. Erewash council Deputy Leader Cllr Becca Everett, Lead Member for Community Engagement, joked: “Hopefully it won’t be wet, wet, wet and families can soak up the sun on what will be a fabulous afternoon of entertainment.”

The event is celebrating its 13th year and concertgoers are urged to get there early if they want to bag a place near the front. The music will begin at 3.10pm with a rock n roll show featuring Alan Becks.

BOLD AS BRASS

Not got much brass? Our FREE

 concerts mean you’ll be sound

A summer of music across Erewash continues in July and August with park concerts by brass bands plus a huge treat for jazz fans. And it does not matter if you do not have much brass – because the events are all free. On Saturday 15th July, leading jazz pianist and singer Wendy Kirkland takes to the stage at 2pm in Ilkeston’s Victoria Park. The Observer has described her repertoire of swing, Latin, funk and soul as “terrific”. Wendy has been compared to jazz legends Diana Krall, Blossom Dearie and Nina Simone.

More 2pm Sunday Bold as Brass concerts will be held at Stanley (23rd July), Ilkeston’s Victoria Park (30th July), Breaston (6th August) and Long Eaton’s West Park (13th August). The finale will be on Saturday, 19th August when Ilkeston Brass Band perform at the town’s Erewash Museum. Erewash Council Deputy Leader Cllr Becca Everett, Lead Member for Community Engagement, said: “There is no better way for music lovers in the borough to spend a relaxing summer afternoon.”

TICKET OFFICE CAMPAIGN

A campaign has been launched to save the Long Eaton railway station's ticket office. Councillor Alan Chewings, who is the Chair of Sawley Parish Council, said: "It is a lifeline for the disabled people living in Long Eaton and Sawley, as well as the elderly. Not everyone has a smartphone to buy a ticket. And it feels like the old and disabled people are left behind.”

He said that having this station among the ones that are now put into consultation is a "mockery". People fighting for the future of the ticket office at the station are expected to show up at the station to show their support at 10.30am on Saturday, July 15, which will be followed by a petition.,

An EMR spokesperson said: “In the mid 90s over 80 percent of all tickets were sold at ticket offices, compared to just 12 percent nationally and less than 5 percent at EMR stations on average today.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said:  “This is not about cutting jobs, no station which is currently staffed will be unstaffed as a result of these proposed reforms.”

Paid the top four.

Once again there was a good turn-out and in spite of the forecast of heavy showers, for once the "gods" were lenient and it remained dry, and mainly sunny with just the odd light shower.

Sam Collett, (right) making his first appearance on a Nisa Open this year, was on peg A8,  and fishing the method feeder (ground bait and maggots) caught carp from the outset and continued to do so until he switched to pole and continued to catch (out and then margin) to end with a magnificent 292-08 to win the match and record the best weight of the year on a Nisa Open.

On peg B22, and also making his debut for the year, Andy Finlay fished his favourite method feeder (pellet on the feeder and pellet bait) to accumulate a weight of 189-03 to take second place, and announce that "Lake Two is back and fishing like the old days".

In contrast to the top two who both caught carp, third-placed Shane Sayer included 62-10 of bream in his 150-15 total.  He caught initially on the method feeder and then switched to the pole to plunder the bream shoal with pellet as bait.

Shaun Weed (A11) fished the entire match on the pole, and by alternating short and margin with an 8 ml pellet bait he caught 146-01 to take fourth place and the final money spot.

On peg A21, Simon Frost (also making his first appearance of the year) started on the method feeder for a few carp before a switch to pole and paste in the margin, which produced several big carp, transformed his match.  He ran out of keepnets and had to return his bream to use his "silvers" net for carp, which probably cost him a higher place.

John Adamson (B1) managed sixth place with 115-13, all caught on the method feeder, mainly in the final 90 minutes of the match, just ahead of Ricky Arms (B11) who had 99-07 and Tony Lamb (A15) who had 96-15.

Many thanks to Rob Lowe for his excellent scales operation.  NB.  Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
