COMMUNITY DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE

Maggie welcomes a new Community Diagnostic Centre in Nottingham

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, has welcomed the news that Nottingham will benefit from a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). It is hoped that the CDC will open in December 2023. Nottingham City CDC will be based at Lister Gate, Nottingham (NG1 7DD) and will increase diagnostic capacity as well as reduce waiting times. Once operational, it will deliver up to 75,000 checks, tests and scans a year, tailored to meet the needs of patients. The facility will specialise in CT, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, cardiology, respiratory and phlebotomy tests and scans. This announcement is on top of the news that Ilkeston Community Hospital’s CDC will be upgraded and will receive a new open MRI scanner, which will be the first of its kind in Derbyshire.  Maggie commented: “I am delighted that a new CDC is due to open in Nottingham later this year. This will enable the people of Nottingham and surrounding communities, such as Erewash, the chance to access life saving tests, checks and scans. I have continually led the calls for the Government to locate CDCs away from hospitals and into everyday settings such as shopping centres and football stadiums – as was done so successfully with the Covid vaccine rollout. I am pleased that the Department of Health and Social Care has listened to my demands and has placed the Nottingham CDC in the heart of the community at Lister Gate. There is no doubt that this will take pressures off local NHS services. This announcement is on top of the news that Ilkeston Community Hospital’s CDC will be expanded and will receive Derbyshire’s first open MRI scanner. Works are also taking place to upgrade the x-ray department and to create purpose-built rooms for ultrasound and physiological measurements. There is no doubt that this one-stop-shop will benefit Erewash residents. Together these CDCs will make it easier for Erewash patients to receive diagnostic tests closer to home. I look forward to visiting both CDCs once they are fully operational.”

The Nottingham City CDC is one of 13 newly announced sites opening across the country before the end of the year, with the Government investing £2.3 billion to deliver up to 160 CDCs across England by 2025. The CDC at Ilkeston Hospital is expected to be fully operational by January 2024.

COUNCIL READY TO HELP

Erewash Borough Council has reacted with dismay at the news high street giant Wilko is on the verge of collapse. The struggling 400-store retailer employs 12,000 and has outlets in Ilkeston’s Bath Street and Nottingham Road in Long Eaton. Administrators are to be appointed after the company – which is still family owned after being founded in Leicester 92 years ago – failed to find sufficient emergency investment. Wilko’s current HQ is in Worksop, where Bassetlaw council’s leader James Naish and local MP Brendan Clarke-Smith were seeking urgent talks with the firm. Erewash’s leader Cllr James Dawson said: “We have been battling tirelessly to turn our local high streets back into vibrant places to shop. Everyone was devastated when Woolworths went to the wall – and this is a fresh blow. Our thoughts are with Wilko’s hard-working employees who face an uncertain future amid the ever-increasing cost of living crisis. The council stands ready to help in any way it can. We are keeping our fingers crossed that a buyer for the company will step forward.”

His hopes that the store chain will be saved were echoed by the GMB union, which represents Wilko staff. A spokesman said of the firm’s woes: "This is extremely concerning but we remain hopeful that a buyer can be found.”

2nd A21 John ADAMSON Nisa Feeders 183-06

3rd B21 Hughie BLAIR Leicester 116-04

4th B15 Tom BATTERBEE Kegworth 101-07

5th A8 Ricky ARMS Hinckley 97-02

6th B17 Shaun GREENFIELD,Manchester AC 94-15

7th A13 Dennis BEECHING 88-12

8th A15 Martin HINCKS Ajax AC 80-14

Paid the top four placed anglers.

In spite of the awful weather report, once again there was a good turn-out, and thankfully, once again, the weather report was incorrect, as instead of thunderstorms and heavy rain it was mainly dry (odd light shower), and although mainly overcast in the brisk West wind (that veered NW later) there was the odd sunny period and it remained warm.

Once again there were anglers spread all around the lake, and although the A bank generally fished the best, two of the prizewinners came from the B side of the lake.

Daz Shaw drew the in-form peg A11 and made no mistake in accumulating an excellent weight of 194-10 of carp to win the match. Daz caught the bulk of his fish on the method feeder although caught some on the pellet waggler. He said he could see fish in his margins in the latter stages but dare not switch from what he was doing as there were no guarantees the

margins would produce.

John Adamson drew flier A21, and very nearly made a mess of it, constantly

tangling in the big bramble (in front and to his right) and catching the reeds

on the island. However, he eventually got his method feeder working

effectively and after a mad final two hours managed to push his weight to

183-06 to fill the second spot.

Hughie Blair on B21 was third with an excellent 116-04, which included

over 67 lbs of bream and skimmers taken on pole and paste at 11m, and

carp taken short on the same bait, with Tom Batterbee (fishing his first Nisa

Open) coming fourth with 101-07 from peg B15.

Many thanks to Wayne Greenfield (assisted by brother Shaun) for their

scales work which enabled an efficient weigh-in. The photos are of the top

two with part of their catches.

Just a note of interest: 23 different pegs on the lake have had money won

from them so far (12 on the B and 11 on the banks). This demonstrated

that all areas can produce fish and it is difficult to predict where weight may

come from. Also, 96 different anglers have fished the matches since the

return to Makins Fishery this year.

There will be no NISA Opens on Wednesdays for the next two weeks as the

lake has been booked for other events, and we return on Wednesday 23rd

August, hopefully then on every Wednesday for the rest of the year.

NB. Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery

(see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

MAGGIE CALLS FOR AWARENESS

Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash, is calling for greater awareness of group B Strep, the leading cause of severe infection in babies, during Group B Strep Awareness Month. New data shows that two-thirds of new and expectant mothers did not receive any information about group B Streptococcus (also known as group B Strep, GBS or Strep B) from a healthcare professional, despite the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) recommending that this information should be provided to all pregnant women since 2017. Group B Strep is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, causing serious infections including sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. Maggie commented:

“Group B Strep is the leading cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies in the UK. I’m pleased to be raising awareness of group B Strep and the terrible impact it can have on families and their babies. This new data shows that more needs to be done to increase awareness of group B Strep in pregnant women and making sure they get the information they need to protect their baby.”

Group B Strep Support is calling for midwives to have better training and education on GBS to ensure they’re fully supported to inform expectant parents about prevention, testing that may be available and key signs of infection. During Group B Strep Awareness Month, the charity is encouraging people to raise awareness of group B Strep among pregnant women, as part of their #BumpItOn campaign.
