Report:

This week’s well-attended match was fished on a much cooler day, with a variable and cooling SW wind blowing at an angle into the low-numbered pegsDespite the odd rain shower, it was mainly dry and cloudy with some sunny periods. As usual, the payout was to the overall winner and then (default) top two on each bank. Last week’s winner John Adamson again drew the B bank, this week moving into the high numbers on B19Fishing his usual method feeder (28g Nisa Porky) towards the island, he had a few early fish and then nearly two hours bite-less before the fish returned, after which he caught carp (from 2 lbs to around 10 lbs) steadily to end with 124-14 and another win. Making a rare visit to the match, Rob Mallabone drew peg A20 and took second place overall (winning the A bank pool) with 107-07Rob started on the method feeder with little response, so he switched to pole and pellet and caught well, especially throughout the final two hours as the fish came close to his bank.Simon Frost drew the same peg as the previous week when he struggled to catch – A15Using what he had learned previously, by switching between the method feeder to the island and bomb and pellet close in, he caught some decent carp to finish with 71-06 to take second place in the A bank poolAndy Findlay (peg A6) managed 70-10 switching between method feeder and bomb and pellet for fourth overall but just missed out on the payouts.

Visitor Simon Diment fished a brilliant match on peg B21 for his fifth-placed 63-07 which scooped top place in the B bank poolFishing pole throughout at various lengths, and baiting with maggots and corn, he caught mainly bream plus a few roach and perch, only hooking a single carp, which he failed to landThis pushed Rich Reeve (peg B24 with 62-02) into sixth placeRich caught mainly on the method feeder with a few fish on the pole. Note was a nice carp of 10-14 caught by Dave Alewood from A8.

Many thanks to Jim Innes and all the others who assisted with the scalesWe will return next Wednesday (10th July).

NEW BRIDGE GETS COUNCIL OK

A spectacular new bridge that is poised to become an Erewash landmark has been given the formal go-ahead by the borough council. The sweeping curve of steel – featuring a stunning suspension arch – will help to transform one of the area’s waterfronts. The iconic crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users will span the Erewash Canal – linking the centre of Long Eaton to the town’s much-loved West Park. It is being funded by government levelling-up money and will replace a bridge that towpath users currently risk banging their heads on because it was built so low. The old Broad Street bridge dates back to 1913. It will be demolished after Erewash’s planning committee gave official permission for its replacement at a Long Eaton Town Hall meeting on Wednesday 26th June. Councillors heard the existing crossing is “showing its age”. A report warned: “Structural assessments suggest a lifespan of only approximately a further ten years.”

The plan also includes a waterside terrace featuring tiered seating for 100 people overlooking the canal. Pontoons on the waterfront will allow kayaks and other small craft to be launched. Refreshment space has been set aside for community events, theatre performances and cinema screenings. Well-lit pathways will deter anti-social behaviour – while the new bridge has been designed to be graffiti-resistant.

The bridge’s balustrade will reference Long Eaton’s lacemaking industry by incorporating a wedding pattern motif.

Construction of the new bridge and waterfront is set to be completed by early 2026 after Long Eaton was awarded almost £25million of central government funding in what is known as a “Town Deal”. The grant for regeneration projects will also see the High Street transformed.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Proud Erewash residents are being urged to use their artistry to trumpet the borough by designing postcards. The local museum wants to put the results on display to mark the golden anniversary of Erewash Borough Council – which was created in 1974 by the merger of three separate authorities. People are invited to submit “a favourite place, a landmark, building or anywhere that gets you inspired to create a piece of art”. The My Erewash Postcard Exhibition will run from 18th July to 31st August. Entries must be A6/postcard size (14.5 x 10.5cm). Jo Brown, who is Culture Development Officer at the Erewash Museum, stressed: “Anyone can have a go.” The project comes hot on the heels of the council launching a new Visit Erewash website to encourage tourism in the borough. It showcases attractions such as the mighty Bennerley Viaduct near Ilkeston and the ancient Hermit’s Cave at Dale Abbey. The interactive website – funded by government levelling-up money – can be found here: A day out in Erewash - Visit Erewash - Derbyshire on your doorstep (visit- erewash.co.uk) Postcards should be submitted to the museum by Saturday 13th July. They will be displayed anonymously but people wanting to collect them at the end of the exhibition are asked to write their names on the back. Digital entries can be emailed to joanne.brown@erewash.gov.uk The Erewash Museum is near Ilkeston’s Market Place and is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm.
