CHRISTMAS BIN COLLECTIONS

Dates for waste and recycling collections during the festive season in Erewash have been confirmed. If your normal bin collection would be Monday 26th December (Boxing Day) then your black, blue or brown bin will instead be emptied on Friday 23rd December. This means that bins that would normally be emptied on Tuesday 27th December will now be collected on Wednesday 28th December. Bins that would normally be collected on Monday 2nd January 2023 will be collected on Tuesday 3rd January 2023, due to the Bank Holiday Monday. Bulky waste and white goods waste will have a final collection date of Wednesday 21st December 2022. The collections will start again on Wednesday 4th January 2023.

For trade waste, essential services (such as food premises) will have a collection between Wednesday 28th and Friday 30th December. Other trade waste will not be collected during Christmas week and customers will be credited. The same applies for customers who will not have a collection on Monday 2nd January 2023, due to the Bank Holiday. Clinical waste that would normally be collected on Monday 26th December will instead be collected on Wednesday 28th December. Waste that would be collected on Tuesday 27th December will instead be collected on Thursday 29th December. Waste that would be collected on Monday 2nd January 2023 will instead be collected on Tuesday 3rd January 2023. Waste that would be collected on Tuesday 3rd January 2023 will instead be collected on Wednesday 4th January 2023.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment at Erewash Borough Council, says: “As always, we have changed the waste collection schedule over the Christmas period to suit Erewash residents and give hardworking staff a break over the festive season. Disruption to collections has been kept to a minimum with all waste collections returning to normal by early January 2023.”

DUCKS ARE SWIMMING IN 2023

We couldn’t be happier to announce that after a two year break, due to Covid, our much-loved Duck Race will be back on 1st January. All our ducks have been keeping fit and are rearing to go! What a better way to meet family and friends over the festive season than at the Annual Duck Race. 

Enjoy a warming cup of mulled wine with a mince pie, tea or coffee or a delicious hot donut. Have a go on our tombola with some lovely prizes to be won, for the little ones we have a Cuddly toy tombola with a prize every time. Some new stalls for 2023, including a face painter for the little ones...definitely worth a look! What a fantastic start to the new year, socialising and supporting a local charity. This popular event is now in its 32nd  year and is always a great fun day. 

 

It takes place at Manor Park Toton, courtesy of Broxtowe Borough Council and sponsored by Michael Key MOT, Servicing & Repair, Long Eaton. We will shortly be contacting all local businesses and requesting that they participate in our ‘Corporate’ race – for just £25 they can sponsor a duck or 2 for the bargain price of £40. They will have a chance to win a prize to share around their employees. This race which takes place immediately before the main race has become a popular and integral part of the day! 

 We usually gather around 1pm and we aim to launch the ducks by 2pm. There is lots to keep everyone busy during the lead up to the race and we try to make sure that everyone who wants to purchase a ticket at just £1.50 can do so. MEETING REPORT ANNUAL MEMBERS MEETING

 We weren’t expecting to be confronted by a piranha at the LENS Wildlife Group AGM but you never know what to expect at our annual members meeting! The club reported an increase in membership and welcomed Catherine Harrison onto the committee. 2022 has been a busy year with Butterfly Transects carried out throughout the summer at 5 local sites. Weekly Conservation work parties continued at Forbes Hole Local Nature Reserve and LENS contributed nature based craft activities and walks at 8 busy community events. These were in addition to LENS popular programme of summer wildlife walks. An entertaining talk by Alan Heath was followed by Joan Breakwell introducing and reading her 3 favourite nature poems. Displays of local minerals, dragonfly exuviae and orchid photographs and even a meteorite fragment from outer space, provided entertaining conversazione at half time. Members then enjoyed videos of wildlife caught on camera by Marion Bryce.

MUSEUM SHOP SUNDAY

Erewash Museum is joining an international campaign to encourage residents to shop locally. Museum Shop Sunday is an annual movement organised by the Association for Cultural Enterprises with Erewash Museum joining them for the first time this year. The aim is for local people to experience independent shops and highlight the important role of retail in the cultural and arts space.
The museum, which is normally closed on a Sunday, will be open on Sunday 27th November with visitors welcome to explore Dalby House and the grounds, as well as the museum shop. It is the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors to do some festive gift shopping, as well as allowing those who cannot make the normal opening hours to visit the museum.

The shop will be overflowing with gifts including plush cuddly animals, notebooks, classic children’s toys, calendars, books and Stephen Millership prints. Illustrated Christmas cards will also be available for those who want to send a festive message along with their gift.

The volunteer-led tea room will be open throughout the day serving both hot and cold drinks, lunches and sweet treats. Anyone who makes a purchase during the extended hours will receive a gift voucher for a hot drink.

“The museum really is a hidden gem in our borough. I hope that Museum Shop Sunday allows more of our residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy Erewash’s cultural hub. It is also a fantastic opportunity for people to buy locally made gifts as the festive season fast approaches!”

LONG EATON LIGHTS

Long Eaton will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland with the annual Christmas light switch on event this month. The event takes place at 5.30pm on Thursday 24th November in Long Eaton Market Place and begins with festive musical performance from the Silver Prize Brass Band. At 6:15pm, Trevvy Sings will take to the stage for a musical performance that includes a special dance performance from Fesa says Dance School. At around 6:45pm the Mayor, Councillor John Sewell, and his guests will arrive. The Long Eaton Chamber of Trade will then announce the winners of the market competitions and name the child who will help to switch on the lights. 

 At 7pm, the Mayor will make a speech, before counting down and switching on the Christmas lights. The Erewash Phoenix Choir will perform traditional Christmas songs to end the festive evening. As well as the entertainment, families will be able to enjoy rides at Woods Fun Fair, food stalls, and a craft and charity market organised by the Long Eaton Chamber of Trade, where people will have the opportunity to shop for gifts from local businesses.

Long Eaton will experience the Christmas spirit this year with beautiful lights, live musical performances, and a wonderful craft market. FREE CHRISTMAS PARKING

Erewash Borough Council is giving the festive gift of free parking this holiday season to encourage residents to shop locally at the borough’s markets and independent businesses. Parking will be free in all car parks in the borough every day after 10am, starting on Saturday 10th December 2022. The final date of free parking is Monday 2nd January 2023, with normal parking charges resuming on Tuesday 3rd January. The Christmas free parking scheme does not include the car park at Long Eaton Train Station.  

The scheme aims to encourage residents and visitors to buy their Christmas gifts at local independent shops and at the historic Ilkeston and Long Eaton markets which are held between 9am and 3pm on Thursday and Saturdays in Ilkeston, and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in Long Eaton. Erewash has many local trades perfect for seasonal shopping, from butchers with the ideal Christmas dinner centrepiece to stationary shops for the best festive cards and wrapping paper. Residents can also use the free parking as a brilliant opportunity to see the Christmas lights which will make the town centres shine throughout the winter months.

 Councillor Michael Powell, Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning, says:  “Over the last few years, the importance of shopping local has become more prevalent with people moving away from large shopping centres. The free Christmas parking allows even more residents to support local people with independent businesses within the Erewash community. We are also aware that the Christmas season is an expensive and difficult time for many, especially in the current financial climate – free parking is one way we can try to make this time a little easier and spread some Christmas joy.”

Report:  Although it was a warm day for the time of the year, the very strong and gusting SW wind made it feel quite chilly as well as making bait presentation difficult for many competitors.  In spite of the conditions, there was good consistency throughout the match length producing an average weight per angler of nearly sixty-five pounds.

Oliver Sleath was not amused when he drew peg 9 but was smiling after the match when he put 125-13 on the scales to win for the second successive week.  He caught fish throughout the day on pole and pellet, including 13 lbs of "silvers" in his mainly (smallish) carp catch.

Second place fell to Colin Southall on peg 29. Finding bait presentation nearly impossible in the gusting wind on the pole, Colin switched to fishing the bomb short and snared some large carp for his 79-11 total. On peg 23, with thirty minutes of the match remaining Steve Beard had very little to show, but then the big carp moved into his margin and fishing with maggots over micros he caught a succession of big fish to put 72-09 on the scales for third place.

Dave Henry could only catch on the bomb and pellet on peg 25, and in spite of losing several fish still managed a weight of 69-14 for fourth place, with the ever-consistent Terry Hill (peg 19) with 66-00 for fifth place (pole and pellet) and Steve Richards (peg 12) taking sixth place with 64-04 (42-14 of silvers and 21-06 of carp).

Report:
After the early morning rain, the weather developed into a dull and cool day with a light SW breeze, although there was some sun later in the afternoon.  With the nights drawing in the match was fished from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
 
On peg 15, Oliver Sleath set his stall out to catch bream of all sizes and fishing with expanders over micro feed he caught steadily throughout the day.  Although he was interrupted by a few carp (which weighed 33-12) he put a magnificent 72-02 of bream and skimmers on the scales for a total of 105-14 and a match win. On the opposite bank on peg 12, Martin Hincks found carp in the very shallow margins in about a foot of water, and with corn bait, he extracted some big samples for his second-placed 84-02.
 
The other anglers found it very hard going and although everyone caught fish they generally struggled for bites.  Terry Winstone (peg 27) eventually found fish in his right margin and included one of over fifteen pounds in his third-placed 64-00, whilst  John Adamson (on peg 5 for the third consecutive match) caught all his fish on bomb with the exception of a single "lump" carp which took corn on the margins. His 52-03 took fourth place.

REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN HEROES

Remembrance services will be held in both Ilkeston and Long Eaton on Sunday 13 November as the Mayor, Councillor John Sewell BEM, invites residents to join him in honouring our fallen heroes. In Ilkeston a parade will begin at South Street car park, with anyone who wishes to join asked to assemble no later than 10.15am in order to march to the Cenotaph in the Market Place at 10.35am. Residents who do not wish to parade are invited to the morning service at St Mary’s Church at 10am before proceeding to the Cenotaph to join the service. 

In Long Eaton a parade will begin at West Gate, with anyone who wishes to join asked to assemble no later than 10.15am. At 10.30am, the parade, led by the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band, will march to the War Memorial outside St Laurence’s Church. Those who attend the 9.30am Mass at St Laurence’s Church, including Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Corbett, will join the parade at 10.45am when the service will begin.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor John Sewell BEM, says: “It is vital that we never forget those who gave their lives in the service of our country. Both Ilkeston and Long Eaton will host remembrance services to allow everyone to give thanks and respect to our fallen heroes. I am honoured to be able to lay a wreath at the Ilkeston Cenotaph and look forward to being with so many of you on such an important day. Lest we forget.”

 Members Meeting October

Just before the clocks went back Don Witton gave the members a

knowledgeable and informative talk entitled ‘Hardy plants and a Winter survival

kit’. Incidentally Don is the keeper of the National collection of Euphorbias.

He gave lots of practical hints and tips in a light hearted fashion going

through the year as he did so.  At the end of the talk there were plants

for sale. Members showed their appreciation for a very enjoyable talk in the

usual way.  

The meeting finished after the raffle and reminders of forthcoming

meetings with a talk by Mike Davey on ‘Gardens:our loyal friends’  on

November17th and the Christmas party {ticket only} on December 15th.

WHAT A TREE-T!

Erewash Borough Council is once again giving away a variety of fruit trees to residents this winter. Stalls will be set up at Long Eaton Market Place on Wednesday 30 November and Ilkeston Market Place on Thursday 1 December. From 10am, residents can collect one fruit tree per household from the following varieties: Scrumptious Apple, Conference Pear and Stella Cherry. Residents will also receive a leaflet with information on their chosen tree and how to care for it.

Leader of Erewash Borough Council, Councillor Carol Hart, said: “The tree giveaway is an immensely popular event, so I encourage everyone to get to the stalls early in order to claim their free fruit tree! This year sees a great variety of trees that will help to take any garden to the next level or act as a fantastic Christmas gift for a gardening enthusiast.”

There will be 150 trees at each location, 50 of each type. Trees are given on a first come, first served basis for residents of the borough. 

GARDEN WASTE REMINDER

The last brown bin collections in the borough for 2022 are right around the corner. Brown bins in the north of the borough – Ilkeston and the surrounding areas – have their last collection week commencing 28th November 2022. Garden waste collections will restart the week of 20th February 2023.

 Brown bins in the south of the borough – Long Eaton and the surrounding areas – will have their last collection week commencing 5th December 2022. Garden waste collections will restart the week of 27th February 2023.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment at Erewash Borough Council, says: “There are only a few weeks left until this year’s final garden waste collections! Anyone with last minute gardening chores to do still has a little time left, so get outside and enjoy the final weeks of 2022 in your garden. Residents are also reminded that they can use their brown bin, alongside their blue bin and green bags, for any extra mixed recycling over the Christmas period.”

IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

 The annual Bonfire and Firework display is right around the corner, meaning this is the last chance for residents to get their tickets at a discounted price. The spectacular ‘Relight my Fire’ themed event takes place on Saturday 5th November at West Park in Long Eaton. The gates will open at 5pm.

Tickets for the popular event are on sale now! An adult ticket can be purchased for £8, and tickets for children aged 16 and under, and senior citizens (over 60), can be purchased for £5 – both offering savings of £2. There is also a family bundle which includes tickets for two adults and up to three children, costing £20, a saving of £11 when compared to buying tickets separately. Discounted tickets can be purchased online at Derby Live and will be available until 12 noon on Saturday 5th November. 

Tickets can also be purchased at full price on the night at the gate: adult tickets cost £10, 16 and under tickets cost £7, senior citizens tickets cost £7 and the family bundle costs £25. Children aged five and under can enter for free regardless of when tickets are purchased.

The event is always popular so residents are encouraged to leave their vehicles at home where possible. Public transport is available for those who are not in walking distance of the event. Bus timetables are available on the Trent Barton website. 

If people are required to travel by car please consider travelling in groups, being considerate of nearby residents, and parking in local car parks instead of West Park’s:

LIBRARY MAY HAVE TO BE DEMOLISHED

Derbyshire Police have reported that specialist structural engineers had been called in to observe the carnage after a car crashed into Sandiacre Library in Doncaster Avenue. The collision left a gaping hole in the wall at around 7.20am on the morning of Sunday, October 30th. Police and emergency vehicles were quickly on the scene and found the library wall had been completely destroyed. A 34-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of driving offences.
